This was one of those once-in-a-lifetime things.
We looked at a few East African safari options: Masai Mara, Serengeti, etc. In the end, the logistics of this trip, as well as the varied nature of the three National Parks won out.
Our itinerary ran something like this:
- Day 1 - Drive 250 km from Nairobi to Amboseli National Park.
- Day 2 - Drive 100 km to Tsavo West National Park.
- Day 3 - Drive to Tsavo East National Park.
- Day 4 - Drive to Voi railway station for a three hour train ride to Mombasa where we were picked up and delivered to a hotel in Diani Beach.
We did a game drive every morning and evening. Dawn and dusk are the best times to see the animals.
Everything was arranged and paid for in advance. We used a company called Natural World Kenya Safaris, who were pretty good, but I think there are lots of companies providing a similar service. We were picked up at our hotel in Nairobi and everything was organised for us after that. Our driver/guide, Francis, was particularly good.
The accommodation was great, and the food was good.
But it was the wildlife that we had come to see.
Occasionally there were a few too many other vehicles jockeying for position; every driver and tourist was keen to get the perfect shot. But generally, we were alone.
The variety and frequency of impressive animals took me by surprise.
