I had a bit of trouble with this one.
On the one hand, this is a city with a lot going for it: a pleasant climate (sitting close to the equator but a mile above sea level), affordable prices, and a low crime rate. It is a surprisingly clean city, possibly due to the tradition of Umuganda, which is a holiday that takes place on the last Saturday of every month for mandatory community service.
On the other hand, there’s the spectre of history. During an unimaginable three-month period in 1994, more than half a million Rwandans lost their lives in the country’s genocide. This in a country with a total population of only 7.5 million.
I made a video and called it A Tale of Two Cities.
This video shows our entry into Rwanda via the Uganda border and our experiences in the city of Kigali.
