An ageing backpacker in a digital world

Sumba and Timor, Indonesia

The islands of Sumba and Timor at the eastern end of the Indonesian archipelago are a short flight and a million miles from the tourist beaches of Bali. I couldn’t recommend them enough.

Sumba

Ten remarkable days on this remote Indonesian island. Pristine beaches, traditional Marapu villages, and the friendliest people I have ever met.

Sumba to Timor

The only option was economy class so off I went. It was hot, dirty, noisy and uncomfortable. I shared a bunk with three sisters who were travelling to Timor to do Islamic studies at university. Truly beautiful people hidden away in this remote corner of the planet.

You meet a better class of people in steerage.

This was the point in my journey where I had to admit defeat. I couldn’t go any further; but it was fun while it lasted.
