Udaipur was the only place on the whole trip where we didn’t book our accommodation in advance. The driver that brought us from Jodhpur dropped us at the Chandpole footbridge and we walked from there.
We wandered around until we found the hotel marked on this map. The area to the west of the footbridge seems to have a good range of accommodation options and is quite walkable. The area east of the bridge is a lot more crowded and difficult to walk.
If you want to see what the hotel looked like you can go here. Maybe it’s just a coincidence but the only hotel we didn’t book in advance was also the best place we stayed in India.
Udaipur is often described as “The Venice of the East” – which is a bit of a stretch, but I have to concede that it has a rather Mediterranean feel about it. There are plenty of chic cafes and souvenir shops and although you never really forget you are in India it has a very different feel to the other cities we visited. The architecture around Lake Pichola is literally palatial and you are never far from a striking view.
Varanasi blew me away but Udaipur came a close second as my favourite place in India.
But we do not exist in a vacuum and some news from back home came out of the blue. A terrorist attack in New Zealand left us stunned and appalled. These names should not be forgotten:

It also contains a commemoration of the Christchurch terrorist attack.
