I’ve never been this organised before but my travel partner was not keen on roughing it so we enjoyed a month ofย glamourous backpacking.
We visited eight magnificent Indian cities in four weeks. The trip was (mostly) relaxed and hassle-free because of our organised itinerary. We planned carefully and (for the most part) booked in advance.
Flying between Jaisalmer ❷, Jodhpur ❸ and Udaipur ❹ is really not an option so we did that bit by bus and car. Also, there is not much point in flying between Agra and Delhi because the Gatimaan Express train only takes 100 minutes and is famously reliable.
The cost of our air and rail travel within India was:
Varanasi ❶ to Jaisalmer ❷ | 177 |
Udaipur ❹ to Jaipur ❺ | 43 |
Jaipur ❺ to Agra ❻ | 36 |
Agra ❻ to Delhi ❼ (by train) | 26 |
Delhi ❼ to Amritsar ❽ | 65 |
Total | 347 NZD |
(These figures are per person in New Zealand Dollars)
We also got a bus from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur and a car from Jodhpur to Udaipur but I can’t remember the cost of those.
How much is that in real money?
$347 New Zealand dollars is equivalent to:
It took me ages to come up with this route and I reckon it turned out really well. It would be possible to do this in either direction and by starting and/or finishing in Varanasi/Amritsar you can take an international flight at both ends.
Flights within India are quite affordable (especially if you book ahead), so if it fits your schedule and budget then I would highly recommend this route.
